Power Awning Problems

Well, it’s been a long time since we’ve had any issues after finally getting over of the AC units fixed. But coupled with most AC use is the use of the awnings to keep the skin of the coach cool (cooler?). It really works…until it doesn’t. 😔

The powered, automated awning was unfurled, but it started raining. I was going to just tilt it so rain would not pool on top but would run of to the rear. I pressed the tilt button but there was no response. Uh oh.

I’ve read in the Zip Dee manual if there are any issues to always cycle the awning through a closing, so I pressed the close button to no avail. Finally, I pressed the open button which worked for a split second then stopped and a message appeared on the control panel: fuse blown.

Now, unfortunately, time was of the essence since I didn’t want rain to pool on top and break the awning. Of course, when in a panic nothing works, instructions can’t be found, Google searches bring up useless videos, emergency instructions are found but deemed a 30-minute fix.

Finally we found the video below which describes an emergency toolkit, which is irritatingly missing from the Zip Dee manual! 😡

If you ever run into an issue of the awning stuck while deployed, click above and it’s all explained. The only additional instruction would be, once you’ve rolled in the awning such that the arms are at a 45- to 60-degree angle with the side of the coach and you are using your drill to bring in the arms, understand that they are moving. They’re just moving in/out VERY, V E R Y slowly.

Emergency Closing Steps:

  1. Unplug front motor
  2. Plug in writing kit (to motor, not to see wire running back to control board)
  3. Clip black wire to a ground
  4. Touch the red wire to the red post on lithium battery until arms are at 45 to 60 degrees.
  5. Use 2 drill tools to draw in arms (set drill to clockwise) until reaching the limit grooves on the arms.
  6. Re-touch red wire to red battery terminal until awning is resting back against the coach.
  7. Call Zip Dee

Once I call Zip Dee, I’ll post how to fix our issue. Oddly enough, I don’t see a fuse in any of the documentation so hopefully the fix won’t be too difficult. 🤞
